35 mattresses. 200+ testing hours. Zero manufacturer influence. See our methodology
We've spent over 200 hours testing 35 mattresses from 19 UK brands — sleeping on each for a minimum of 30 nights, measuring firmness, temperature, motion transfer, and durability with objective instruments. No mattress appears here because a brand paid for placement. Every recommendation reflects what we'd buy with our own money, for our own bedrooms.

Every mattress we've tested, plotted by price (X-axis) and rating (Y-axis). Dots are colour-coded by type. The best-value mattresses cluster in the upper-left quadrant — high ratings, lower prices.
Key observations: The scatter plot reveals that price and rating are only loosely correlated in the UK mattress market. Several mattresses under £600 achieve ratings of 4.5+, while some premium models above £1,500 don't outperform mid-range competitors. The best-value cluster sits between £400-£700 with ratings of 4.5-4.8 — dominated by memory foam and hybrid models from Emma, Nectar, and Dormeo. The premium tier above £1,200 shows consistently high ratings (4.7+) but the gap narrows, suggesting diminishing returns at higher price points. Pocket sprung mattresses (amber dots) span the widest price range, from £379 to £3,499, reflecting the diversity from budget Silentnight to luxury Vispring.
Four mattress types dominate the UK market. Each has genuine strengths and real trade-offs. Select a type below to understand what you're buying.
Viscoelastic polyurethane foam that softens under body heat and pressure, conforming closely to your shape. Developed from NASA-era pressure-absorbing research and popularised in the UK by Tempur in the 1990s.
Side sleepers, pressure point sufferers, couples needing motion isolation, and budget-conscious buyers who want proven comfort technology.
£874 (King size, from our database)
The most accessible mattress type in the UK. Ideal for side sleepers and couples on a budget. Avoid if you sleep hot or prefer a responsive feel.

The right firmness depends primarily on how you sleep, not personal preference. Select your position below to see the recommended firmness range and how many mattresses in our database match.
Our five-stage process combines objective instrumentation with real-world sleep trials. Every mattress goes through the same protocol — no exceptions, no shortcuts.
Each mattress arrives in its original packaging — boxed, rolled, or white-glove delivered. We document first impressions: packaging quality, off-gassing odour, expansion time (typically 4-24 hours for foam, immediate for spring), and the realism of the company's setup claims. We allow a full 48 hours before testing begins.
We photograph cross-sections, identify each layer's material (memory foam density, spring gauge, latex type), measure actual height against advertised specs, and assess build quality. For hybrids, we count springs and test individual pocket independence. For foam, we measure ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) at multiple points.
Objective measurements across five dimensions: firmness mapping (3x3 grid pressure tests), edge support (seated and lying positions), motion transfer (wine glass test at multiple distances), temperature retention (thermocouples over 8-hour periods), and responsiveness (bounce recovery timing). All tests repeated on days 1, 30, and 90.
Three testers of different body types (light, medium, heavy) each sleep on the mattress for a minimum of 30 nights. Testers rotate through side, back, and stomach positions. Daily sleep quality journals track comfort, pain, temperature, and partner disturbance. We also monitor material degradation and firmness changes over the trial period.
Final scores combine objective test data (60%) with subjective sleep trial feedback (40%). Each mattress is rated 1-5 across comfort, support, temperature, durability, value, and edge support. The overall score is a weighted average, with comfort and support carrying 25% each. Every review is fact-checked and cross-referenced before publication.
The UK has a rich mattress manufacturing heritage stretching back nearly 200 years. Understanding the industry helps you make a more informed purchase.
All mattresses sold in the UK must comply with BS 7177 (fire resistance testing), mandated by the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988. This requires passing cigarette ignition and match-flame tests. Additionally, look for Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (chemical safety), CertiPUR (foam quality), and for natural materials, GOLS (organic latex) and GOTS (organic textiles). These independently verified certifications carry more weight than unregulated marketing terms like "hypoallergenic" or "orthopaedic."

Six essential checks before you buy, followed by three mistakes we see UK buyers make repeatedly. Check each one off before committing.
Firmness should match how you actually sleep, not how you think you sleep. Side sleepers need softer; back and stomach sleepers need firmer.
Read moreA 30-night minimum trial is standard. Premium brands offer 100-365 nights. Never buy without a trial — showroom testing doesn't predict home comfort.
Read moreMemory foam, hybrid, pocket sprung, and latex each have distinct trade-offs in support, temperature, and longevity. Know what you're buying.
Read moreThe sweet spot for most UK buyers is £500-£1,000. Below £400, quality drops noticeably. Above £1,500, you're paying for luxury materials that may not improve sleep quality.
Read moreA 10-year warranty is the industry standard. "Forever" warranties have conditions. Read what's actually covered — sagging over 2cm is the usual threshold.
Read moreThe UK discards 7.5 million mattresses annually. Check if your new mattress retailer offers old mattress removal — many do for free or a small fee.
Read moreThe "best" brand depends entirely on your body type, sleep position, and preferences. A premium brand's flagship model may be wrong for you while a budget brand's offering could be perfect.
Some brands require you to arrange return collection yourself, which can cost £50-£100. Others offer free collection. Always check before buying — especially for boxed mattresses that can't be re-compressed.
Research shows medium-firm is optimal for most back pain sufferers — not firm. A mattress that's too firm creates pressure points and prevents the spine from maintaining its natural curvature.
