The charcoal layer — what it actually changes on Original’s spring core

Most people hear “bamboo and charcoal” and picture a different mattress. It is not. OTTY’s own copy calls Pure an enhancement of Original. The steel is the same class: up to 2,000 encapsulated pockets, each 16cm tall, with Airflow channels in the side so the edge is not a solid foam wall. Reflex foam still sits over that unit. The HD base is still underneath. Depth is still 25cm. Trial and warranty do not change. If you came here expecting a higher coil count, you wanted Pure Pro — that is the extra 1,000 × 2cm comfort springs and 27cm.

What changes is the sleep surface. Original wears a thick knitted, heavy cover. Pure wears an embroidered cover that OTTY says contains 2cm of bamboo-and-charcoal infused memory foam, then another charcoal-and-bamboo memory layer before the reflex pad. That is why it prints 6.5/10 instead of 7. You meet a slightly slower, slightly plusher first inch. The 16cm coils still push back after that. I can tell the difference in ten seconds: Pure’s quilt gives more than Original’s knit, then the same OTTY bounce arrives. Activated charcoal is porous. In a water filter, that porosity adsorbs gunk. In a 2cm foam pad, it is a marketing layer: OTTY says it helps with moisture and odour, and that bamboo is breathable and moisture-wicking. A cover that smells less stale after a sweaty week is a claim I will allow as plausible. “Naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic” is brand language. “A great choice for those with asthma” is a sentence I will not repeat as advice. Charcoal in foam is not a medical device. We did not run a mite lab. We did not measure VOC drop because someone printed charcoal on a hangtag.

Cooling is the argument people actually buy. Airflow perforations and a 16cm spring unit move air. That is physics you can feel on a still Exeter night compared with a cheap all-foam guest bed. If you have not slept on an OTTY yet, you are not a Pure customer — you are an Original customer who has not tried the flagship. The value shopper who “just wanted the charcoal one” is paying for a quilt. Start on Original unless you already know you want this cover.
2. David already wanted Extra Firm, and 6.5/10 will not become 9 in the box. Pure is slightly softer than Original, not firmer. Extra Firm is the flippable OTTY at 9/10 and 10/10, from the same £524.99 class as Pure. OTTY Extra Firm Hybrid is the support story. Pure is the charcoal-cover story. OTTY’s live Pure page walks six layers. Count them as a quilt, a comfort foam, a reflex pad, a 16cm spring unit, Airflow sides, and an HD base — not as a secret seventh coil pack. There is no extra 2cm comfort-spring layer. That belongs to Pure Pro. If a marketplace listing pastes 3,000-spring copy onto this URL, that is leftover copy from another mattress.

Depth is printed: 25cm on every live size we opened, including EU and Emperor. Nothing beyond that figure is published. Pure Pro prints 27cm because of the extra comfort-spring layer. Pure+ prints 28cm. If your bunk has a hard cap, measure the expanded mattress. Do not trust a blog that pasted Pro height onto Pure.

Firmness: 6.5/10 depends who sits down

OTTY prints 6.5/10, medium-firm. That is the honest number. Original is 7. Pure Pro is 7 with a second spring layer. Extra Firm is 9 or 10 depending which side you land on. Cooling is where the brochure and the bedroom argue. Airflow holes and 16cm springs move more air than a slab of closed-cell memory. That is real. Unboxing and the first week

Pure arrives vacuum-rolled in an OTTY box. A king hybrid only reaches the front bedroom of an Exeter two-up-two-down because it arrives packed. Two people on anything above a single. Cut the wrap on the bed base. Give it 24–72 hours before you decide 6.5/10 is wrong — the first night on a half-expanded hybrid is a useless test. Open a window for the new-foam smell. CertiPUR is not a perfume.

The 16cm coils ping as they open. That is steel, not a fault. Wait until it is roughly 25cm before fighting fitted sheets. OTTY’s live picker already prints the centimetres; still wait, then measure if a bunk is fussy.

Bed base and sheets

OTTY says divans, slatted frames, adjustable bases and platforms are fine, and they like slats for airflow underneath. They do not guarantee thin steel frames. Keep slat gaps around 7cm or less — a wide gap lets the HD base sag between bars and will not help the 10-year paperwork. A tired sprung base will make Pure feel cheaper than it is. Floor use is a last resort for a week, not a five-year plan.

Sheets: 25cm. Ordinary 25cm fitted sheets usually stay on after expansion. Extra-deep 30–35cm pockets help with a thick protector. They become more of an argument on Pure Pro at 27cm. Add a protector for the trial; do not glue it down.
