Best boxed OTTY if you already knew you wanted 28cm, a slower 5.5/10 surface, and two spring units in one box. Not automatically the best OTTY. Original remains the default for most people: cheaper, 25cm, 7/10, a small double, EU and Emperor sizes. We score Pure+ 4.2/5 because Sarah’s shoulder at 62kg / 9st 11lb went in and stayed in like a cloud, Emma’s at 71kg / 11st 2lb agreed, David’s hips at 104kg / 16st 5lb went too far in — a hammock — you pay for height, and the 4ft shopper is sent elsewhere.

OTTY calls it the softest and most comfortable mattress in the range, with more springs and memory foam than the others. That is their sales line. The honest read is: tallest boxed hybrid, real dual-unit build, medium 5.5/10. Use the 100-night trial like an adult, not a Friday lie-in after reading the 4000 badge.

Bottom line: side sleeper around Sarah’s 62kg / 9st 11lb, extra-deep sheets already in the basket, you wanted the flagship climb and the hug. Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb on her side is still in the maybe. Heavier back at David’s 104kg / 16st 5lb, stomach sleeper, small-double frame, or anyone Original already served — look at Original or Extra Firm. If you only wanted charcoal foam without 28cm, start on Pure Pro.

Two spring units adding to 4,000 — and why the count is not comfort

The clever bit is not “more springs, therefore better.” It is two separate pocket-spring units sharing one cover. OTTY lists an 8cm encapsulated layer of up to 2,000 coils, then — lower in the stack — a 4cm encapsulated layer of up to another 2,000. Airflow side support surrounds both. Add the two “up to” figures and the badge says 4,000. That is a real dual-unit hybrid, not Original with a thicker foam lid. Press the surface and the taller unit answers first; the shorter unit is a second stop, not a second mattress.

Comfort does not climb with the badge. Pure+ is the softest current boxed OTTY — 5.5/10 — because OTTY also puts more memory foam on this model than on the others. Their side-sleeper FAQ says a total of 5cm of memory foam on top of the springs. That is their wording. More coils plus more foam made a slower, taller bed, not a plank: a cloud for Sarah Mitchell at 62kg / 9st 11lb, a hammock for David Patel at 104kg / 16st 5lb. Original’s up-to-2,000 × 16cm springs at 7/10 already do the nightly job for most people.

OTTY’s own “is a 4000 spring mattress good?” FAQ says they find this the maximum count at which you can still feel a difference. Believe that more than a forum thread that treats 4,000 as a medical grade. Sarah Mitchell at 62kg / 9st 11lb wanted the slower surface and got a cloud. Emma Thompson at 71kg / 11st 2lb wanted it too. David Patel at 104kg / 16st 5lb wanted the 7/10 or the 9/10 — he sank. We give it 4.2/5. The missing points are not rounding errors.

1. 5.5/10 is too soft for David at 104kg, and for a stomach sleeper who needed Extra Firm. OTTY recommends Pure+ for side and back sleepers. Sarah’s shoulder at 62kg / 9st 11lb agreed — a cloud. Emma’s at 71kg / 11st 2lb agreed. David Patel at 104kg / 16st 5lb on his back had hips too far in — a hammock. Four thousand pocket springs did not raise the floor under his pelvis. James Wright at 86kg / 13st 8lb is the lead reviewer, not David’s stand-in. If you already hammock on your front, this is the wrong OTTY — Extra Firm is the flippable 9/10 and 10/10, aimed at about 15st+. Do not buy Pure+ because the badge sounded orthopaedic.
2. You lose the small double, and you buy extra-deep sheets. Live picker: single, double, king, super king. No 4ft. No EU. No Emperor. Original still sells those extra sizes. 28cm eats standard 25cm fitted sheets. Rachel popped a corner on the first night. That is a real cost on top of the mattress. If your frame is 120 × 190cm, this one is already out.
3. Original already does the job for most people. From £499.99 the day this was from £599.99. 25cm, 7/10, up to 2,000 × 16cm springs, small double still listed. Pure+ is the tallest boxed OTTY and a real two-unit build. It is also a flagship climb. If you already slept well on Original, you are paying for height and a softer surface, not a repaired night. Pros and cons

What is inside: the eight-layer stack

OTTY’s numbered tour on the live Pure+ page is eight steps. The hero description still talks about “7 layers of memory foam and springs.” That is a counting quirk, not a secret ninth foam. We follow the eight-step tour. There are two pocket-spring units. Foam is CertiPUR and Europur. FIRA / BS7177 for UK fire rules.

OTTY’s side-sleeper FAQ: a total of 5cm of memory foam, fixed on top of the 4,000 encapsulated pocket springs. Cover visco is 2cm of that story. Depth of the whole mattress is 28cm on every listed size. If a retailer listing pastes Original’s 16cm spring copy onto Pure+, that is leftover copy from another mattress — this model’s own tour is 8cm plus 4cm.

Firmness: 5.5/10, and the FAQ that says 5/10

Pure+’s own hero prints Medium Firmness | 5.5/10. The “How firm is the OTTY Pure+ mattress?” FAQ on the same page repeats 5.5/10 and calls it a medium mattress. That is the number we use. On the Pure product page, a comparison FAQ currently says Original and Pure Pro sit at 7/10 and “the Pure+ is softer at 5/10.” We are noting the blurb. We are not averaging it into 5.25. This model’s own page wins.

For Sarah Mitchell at 62kg / 9st 11lb on her side, 5.5 was the hug — a cloud, the first OTTY that finally let her shoulder in without a perch. For Emma Thompson at 71kg / 11st 2lb on her side, 5.5 was the hug with a floor. For David Patel at 104kg / 16st 5lb on his back, the floor arrived late: a hammock. I landed at about 5.5/10 as a combination sleeper at 86kg / 13st 8lb who is not David’s weight — slower than Original’s 7/10, taller than Pure Pro’s 27cm, not a marshmallow if you are light. Ten minutes on a showroom sit will feel firmer than night four in a warm Swansea terrace. Foam softens as it warms to you. Use a shop to reject a surface you hate. Use the 100 nights to live with 5.5.

Sleep positions and body weight

OTTY’s Pure+ page does not print a per-side stone limit we could copy from this model. Treat David’s 104kg / 16st 5lb week as the practical ceiling for “this is my main bed,” not a lab measurement. Above that, Extra Firm or Original is the cheaper way to stay inside OTTY than hoping 4,000 coils “bed in” under a heavier frame.

Body weight is not a vibe. It is how far you travel through the comfort layer before the core holds you. Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb often needs a softer top so her shoulder can drop. David at 104kg / 16st 5lb often needs that same top to stop sooner, or his hips make a hammock. James at 86kg / 13st 8lb sits between them — useful as a typical UK male, useless as a stand-in for a 104kg back sleeper. This brand does not print a useful per-side kilogram limit on the product page we used. Treat David’s 104kg week as a comfort signal, not a lab certificate, and use the home trial if you are in his weight class.

Sarah and David are 42kg apart. On Pure+ that is not a small disagreement: at 62kg she got a cloud; at 104kg he got a hammock. More springs plus a softer comfort stack cannot run two firmnesses. Couples with that gap should not buy Pure+ as the compromise — Original at 7/10 is the OTTY that actually holds the heavier partner without dumping the lighter one into a perch, and Extra Firm is David’s mattress if the heavier partner is who you are buying for. Heat, couples, edges

Cooling is better than a closed-cell foam slab and is not a chimney. Airflow around both spring layers, drilled cooling foam, bamboo-and-charcoal infusion — that is the recipe OTTY prints. Emma Thompson at 71kg / 11st 2lb kept the 5.5 hug in Swansea with the sash cracked — hot sleeper, not a probe. Sarah Mitchell at 62kg / 9st 11lb, sharing, felt less sticky than on thick all-foam and still not “cold.” James Wright at 86kg / 13st 8lb, who already sleeps hot, would not sell this as a heatwave mattress.

Motion: typical hybrid isolation. Better than a cheap open-coil, not silent like a thick all-foam. Sarah at 62kg noticed a partner get up and did not call it a problem. Edges: Airflow around both units is the interesting change versus a single-unit hybrid. I sit to put socks on at 86kg and the corner compresses less than a thin guest hybrid, still not a Hypnos perch. David Patel at 104kg / 16st 5lb sitting was worse — the same 42kg gap that hammocked his hips. Rachel Adams at 68kg / 10st 10lb could perch; she still would not start a 16-stone back here. Unboxing and the first week

Pure+ arrives vacuum-rolled in an OTTY box. 28cm of dual-unit hybrid is heavier and more awkward than Original’s 25cm of the same footprint. A single can be a one-person lift if you are stubborn. Double and up want two people — OTTY’s own delivery is two-person as standard, which is the honest hint. Cut the wrap on the bed base. Give it 24–72 hours before you decide 5.5 is wrong — the first night on a half-expanded hybrid is a useless test. Open a window for the new-foam smell.

Springs were quiet after expansion in Swansea. Wait until it is roughly full 28cm before fighting extra-deep sheets onto the corners. First-week firmness often reads a touch firmer than week three. That is the stack opening, not you “getting used to a bad bed.” David Patel’s 104kg / 16st 5lb hip note showed up after a few nights — which is why a weekend at a relative’s house is not the 100 nights. Sarah’s 62kg hug showed up on night one.

Bed base and sheets

OTTY says divan, slatted, adjustable or platform is fine, and they like slats for airflow. They do not guarantee steel frames with thin steel supports — sag risk. Keep slat gaps around 7cm or less. A tired sprung base will make Pure+ feel cheaper than it is. Floor use is a last resort for a week, not a five-year plan.

Sheets: 28cm printed. Ordinary 25cm fitted sheets ping. Buy extra-deep pockets — 35cm as a UK starting point, 40cm if you add a quilted protector. That is one of the reasons not to climb here if your linen cupboard is already full of Original-depth sheets you refuse to replace. Add a protector for the trial; do not glue it down.
