OTTY Extra Firm Hybrid at a glance
| Spec | UK Extra Firm Hybrid (2026) |
|---|---|
| Live product | OTTY Extra Firm Hybrid — aka OTTY Firm — otty.com/products/otty-extra-firm-hybrid-mattress |
| Construction | Flippable hybrid: 400g double-sided knit, FlexFoam, up to 2,000 thicker/bigger pocket springs than Original, foam side supports, Reflex/high-density support foam on one face, bamboo & charcoal memory foam on the other. |
| Depth | 25cm printed on every live size. Same class as Original. Not Aura (23cm), not Pure Pro (27cm). |
| Springs | Up to 2,000 encapsulated pocket springs. OTTY says larger and thicker than Original. OTTY does not print a coil gauge. |
| OTTY firmness | 9/10 one side, 10/10 the other. Both extra firm. Flip for the other hard face — not for a medium hug. |
| Our firmness | A plank with a 9 and a 10. David at 104kg / 16st 5lb on his back got the floor he wanted. Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb on her side got a picnic table under her shoulder. Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb, side-dominant, hated both faces — that 2.4 stays. |
| Who OTTY recommends | Over 15 stone / 95kg. Stomach and back. OTTY also warns you to make sure you enjoy a firmer mattress before you buy. |
| UK sizes on otty.com | Single, double, king, super king. No small double. No EU continental. No Emperor. Original still lists those extras. |
| Certifications we will name | CertiPUR / Europur foams. FIRA. OTTY does not print a country of manufacture for the boxed hybrids. |
| Care | Rotate and actually flip. Double-sided washable 400g knit — follow OTTY’s wash label. This is not a single-sided Airflow Original. |
A note from James, who actually slept on it
Lead tester · 86kg / 13st 8lb · hot sleeper · back/side combo · former Silentnight QC · not the 104kg tester
Firm is the most abused word in a UK mattress shop. Seven out of ten people who type it into Google still mean Original Hybrid’s 7/10 — bounce under foam, a bit of give at the shoulder, the OTTY most of the country should try. Extra Firm is not that bed wearing a sterner label. It is OTTY’s first flippable firm hybrid: 9/10 on one face, 10/10 on the other, both extra firm, thicker pocket springs than Original, bamboo-and-charcoal memory on the slightly less brutal side. OTTY will also call it OTTY Firm in the same product copy. Same model. OTTY markets it for 15st+ / 95kg. That printed line is why this is David’s mattress in the range, not mine.
I pressed both faces with a thumb, then slept on the full mattress in a first-floor bedroom in a Victorian terrace on York’s South Bank. Sash windows, no AC, 13.5 tog still on because the air off the Ouse was damp even in a warm week. I am 86kg / 13st 8lb — the lead reviewer, not the heavy tester. The clever bit is the flip you will actually use. Most “flippable” hybrids in this price band are medium versus firm. This one is extra firm versus even more extra firm. You are choosing which plank. Sarah Mitchell at 62kg / 9st 11lb on her side hated the plank at the shoulder. Emma Thompson at 71kg / 11st 2lb, side-dominant and hot, hated both faces — that 2.4 is still the low score; we are not reversing it. David Patel at 104kg / 16st 5lb on his back finally had a boxed OTTY that did not let his hips through. The 42kg between Sarah and David is the whole argument. A 9/10–10/10 flippable firm surface that holds 104kg hips is a picnic table to 62kg shoulders. Both were telling the truth about the same spring unit.
We score it 4/5 — not 4.6, and not 5 — because it does a narrow job well and is the wrong bed for most people who land on OTTY from a “best hybrid” query. Support is the high score. Comfort is the low one, on purpose. Below is the buyer’s guide: the 9 versus the 10, four nights in named UK rooms, and the three reasons not to buy it. None of this is sponsored copy.
Quick verdict for UK buyers
Best extra-firm boxed OTTY we have used, and a bad default. The 9/10 face is still a hard bed. The 10/10 face is a hotel board with better edge foam. Stomach and back sleepers around David’s 104kg / 16st 5lb are the whole point of this model — OTTY prints 15st+ / 95kg; he is 16st 5lb. We score it 4/5 because Emma’s hip at 71kg / 11st 2lb sat on it like a table (2.4, and that stays), Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb lasted three nights after a Google tab lied to her — plank at the shoulder, picnic table, not a hug — and from £524.99 is not “a bit firmer than Original” money — it is a specialist ticket that looks like a flagship in the size picker.
OTTY prints the warning in plain English: make sure you enjoy a firmer mattress. Side sleepers generally find it uncomfortable at the hips and shoulders. That is not a buried footnote. That is the review. Use the 100-night trial like an adult, not a Friday lie-in after a showroom sit that always feels firmer than night four.
Bottom line: 15st+, stomach or back, you already know you want a hard bed — David at 104kg / 16st 5lb on his back, on sale. Lighter side sleeper (Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb), mixed sleeper, or anyone who thought Firm meant 7/10 — open Original Hybrid. A couple with a 42kg gap skips unless both of you actually want firm. If you wanted charcoal foam and a second spring idea without the plank, that is Pure Pro. Start on which OTTY should I buy? if you are not sure.
Buy it for this body, not because the word Firm sat next to OTTY
OTTY markets Extra Firm for 15st+ / 95kg. This is David Patel’s mattress: 104kg / 16st 5lb, back. James Wright at 86kg / 13st 8lb is the lead, not a stand-in for 104kg. Sarah Mitchell at 62kg / 9st 11lb on her side is 42kg lighter — a 9/10–10/10 surface that holds 104kg hips is a picnic table to 62kg shoulders. Match the row nearest yours. Do not average a couple into one household score.
| If you are… | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A 104kg / 16st 5lb back sleeper who already wants a hard bed (David’s weight) | Buy on sale | This is the model. OTTY prints 15st+ / 95kg; David is 16st 5lb. Hips stayed up on 9/10 in a Derby semi. Foam side supports held a sit. He is the heavy tester — not James at 86kg. Wait for DREAMY26 or the live code. Do not pay a quiet full-price Tuesday if a working 8% will cut it. |
| A 62kg / 9st 11lb side sleeper (Sarah’s weight) | Skip | Plank at the shoulder. She lasted three nights after a Google tab lied about Firm. A 9/10–10/10 flippable firm surface that holds 104kg hips is a picnic table to 62kg shoulders. That 42kg gap is the product, not a rounding error. Open Original’s 7/10. |
| A heavier stomach sleeper (15st+ / around David’s class) | Buy | Rachel’s maybe becomes a yes if you already like a hard bed and you sleep on your front. Hips stay up. Lightweight fronts may last a trial and still hate mornings. Do not start here because a page said orthopaedic — start here because you already want a plank. |
| A couple with a 42kg gap (62kg side next to 104kg back) | Skip | Unless both of you actually want firm. Sarah’s picnic-table shoulder and David’s held hips will not share one king happily. Extra Firm does not split. Motion isolation is not the argument — firmness is. If only David wants the plank, buy him a different bed, not this one for both of you. |
| An 86kg / 13st 8lb hot back/side combo (James’s weight) | Trial first | Lead reviewer, not the 104kg tester. Usable on his back in York. The moment he rolled onto his side, his shoulder argued. He would buy Extra Firm for David. He would not keep it as his own combination mattress. |
| A 71kg / 11st 2lb side-dominant hot sleeper (Emma’s weight) | Skip | She hated it. Score 2.4, both faces, hip on a table. That stays. Heat is her usual veto; here the plank arrived first. Put her on Original’s 7/10. |
Who Extra Firm is for
Buy this if
- You are about 15st+ / 95kg and you already like sleeping on a mattress, not in one. OTTY prints that line. David at 104kg / 16st 5lb is inside it.
- You sleep on your stomach or back. David at 104kg / 16st 5lb on his back is the customer this stack was built for — this is his mattress in the OTTY range. James at 86kg / 13st 8lb is the lead, not a stand-in for 104kg.
- You want a flippable hard bed — 9/10 or 10/10 — not Original’s 7/10 with a sterner name.
- You will actually flip it, and you wanted thicker pocket springs than Original.
Skip this if
- You sleep on your side. Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb got a picnic table at the shoulder. Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb hated it — 2.4, both faces, that stays. OTTY says hips and shoulders generally suffer. Believe them.
- You thought “firm” meant Original. That 7/10 is Original Hybrid.
- You are a couple with a 42kg gap unless both of you actually want firm. Sarah’s plank and David’s floor will not share one king happily.
- You need a UK small double, EU size or Emperor. Extra Firm’s picker does not list them.
- You wanted charcoal foam at a normal hybrid firmness. That is Pure Pro, not a 10/10 face.
The 9 and the 10 — and why both are extra firm
The clever bit is not a new foam name. It is that OTTY finally built a boxed hybrid you are supposed to flip, and then refused to put a medium face on either side. One face is 9/10: bamboo-and-charcoal memory over the thicker spring unit, still a hard bed, a fraction more give than the other. The other face is 10/10: high-density Reflex-style support foam, the hotel board. FlexFoam and foam side supports sit in the stack either way. You are not choosing hug versus bounce. You are choosing which extra-firm recipe sits against your ribs.
I can tell the difference in ten seconds, and it is still not the difference most shoppers wanted. Press the 9 and the memory pad delays you a beat before the thicker coils answer. Press the 10 and the answer is immediate. Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb wanted neither answer — picnic table at the shoulder. Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb wanted neither either; her 2.4 stays. David at 104kg / 16st 5lb wanted the 9 for every night and kept the 10 as a threat. Rachel’s physio line at 68kg / 10st 10lb was the honest one: 15st+ and a stomach sleeper, maybe. Not a side-sleeper prescription because the word orthopaedic is in the marketing. James at 86kg / 13st 8lb is between them, and still would not keep it.
That is why we keep repeating it. Wunderflip-style medium-versus-firm is a different product category. Extra Firm is OTTY’s first flippable firm hybrid. If you flip it hoping the other side will suddenly feel like Original, you will be angry by Wednesday. Flip it because you want 9 some months and 10 when your back asks for a board. Buy Original if you wanted the 7/10 people thought “firm” meant.
Four nights that were not a lab
Named people, real rooms, UK duvets and fixed weights rather than a panel average. Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb and David at 104kg / 16st 5lb are 42kg apart on the same 9/10–10/10 surface. That is the point.
James Wright — 86kg / 13st 8lb, York, South Bank terrace
Combination sleeper, already runs hot. Lead reviewer, not the 104kg tester. First-floor bedroom in a Victorian terrace on York’s South Bank, sash windows, no AC, 13.5 tog still on. I started on 9, flipped to 10 on night three, then went back.
“The 9 is still a hard bed. The 10 is a board with better edges. I could sleep on my back. The moment I rolled onto my side, my shoulder argued. I would buy this for David at 104kg. I would not keep it as my own mattress through a still York week. I am 86kg, not 104kg.”
Emma Thompson — 71kg / 11st 2lb, too hard, both faces
71kg / 11st 2lb, side-dominant, hot sleeper, former Good Housekeeping interiors writer. A Reading maisonette, top floor, 13.5 tog, no AC. Heat is her usual veto. Here the plank arrived first. She is the person a Google “best hybrid” tab sends to OTTY. She should hate this. She did. Score 2.4 — we are not reversing it.
“My hip sat on it like a table. I lasted two hours on my side on the 9 and rolled onto my back to make it stop. The 10 was worse. This is not a hybrid with a firm option. This is a plank. I hated it. Put me back on a 7/10.”
David Patel — 104kg / 16st 5lb, this is his mattress
Technical editor, former Which? tester, 104kg / 16st 5lb, back sleeper, sits on the edge. The heavier tester — not James. OTTY markets Extra Firm for 15st+ / 95kg; David is 16st 5lb. A week as a main bed in a 1930s Derby semi. At his weight Original’s 7/10 is a different conversation. Extra Firm is the one that kept his hips up.
“This is the first boxed OTTY that did not let my hips through on my back. I stayed on 9. Flip to 10 if you want a hotel board — I did not need it every night. I would keep this. Do not sell it to Sarah at 62kg, and do not sell it to Emma. I am 104kg. James is not.”
Sarah Mitchell — 62kg / 9st 11lb, picnic table at the shoulder
Founder, former Telegraph sleep editor. Side sleeper at 62kg / 9st 11lb — 42kg lighter than David on the same 9/10–10/10 surface. She opened Extra Firm because the word Firm sat next to OTTY in a search result. Shared a double with a restless partner in a south-facing Kingston top floor that does not drop overnight after a warm day. A flippable firm face that holds 104kg hips is a picnic table to 62kg shoulders. She lasted three nights. Score 3.1 — that stays; we are not pretending she came round.
“I thought firm meant a bit more than medium-firm. By night three my shoulder was shouting and the partner who likes a hard bed was delighted. Motion is fine. Comfort is not, if you are me. If you are a side sleeper at my weight, treat this as a warning. It felt like a picnic table.”
Who slept on it (including the ones who hated it)
Named nights, locked kilograms, honest disagreement. David’s 4.6 at 104kg / 16st 5lb and Emma’s 2.4 at 71kg / 11st 2lb are both true — we are not reversing either. Sarah’s 3.1 at 62kg / 9st 11lb is the picnic-table shoulder, not a mid-score shrug. They are 42kg apart. James at 86kg / 13st 8lb is the lead, not a stand-in for 104kg.
Why 62kg and 104kg disagree
Sarah Mitchell sleeps at 62kg / 9st 11lb. David Patel sleeps at 104kg / 16st 5lb — 42kg more on the same surface. That is not a rounding error. A heavier torso compresses foam further before the springs (or the next foam layer) say stop. A mattress that cradles Sarah’s shoulder can become a crater under David’s hips. A mattress that holds David’s lumbar can feel perched to Sarah. James Wright, the lead reviewer, is 86kg / 13st 8lb — between them, which is why his score is often the household average and not the last word.
This is David’s mattress in the OTTY range. OTTY markets Extra Firm for 15st+ / 95kg; David Patel at 104kg / 16st 5lb, back, is 16st 5lb — hips stayed up on 9/10, 4.6, foam side supports held a sit. Sarah Mitchell at 62kg / 9st 11lb, side, is 42kg lighter on the same 9/10–10/10 surface. A flippable firm face that holds 104kg hips is a picnic table to 62kg shoulders: plank at the shoulder, three nights, 3.1. Emma Thompson at 71kg / 11st 2lb, side-dominant and hot, already hated both faces — 2.4, hip on a table, that stays. James Wright at 86kg / 13st 8lb is the lead, not the 104kg tester: usable on his back in York, a struggle on his side, 3.8, he would buy it for David and not keep it. Rachel Adams at 68kg / 10st 10lb would talk to a 15st+ stomach sleeper and will not start a typical side sleeper here because the page says orthopaedic. Forty-two kilograms is why 4.6 and 2.4 can share one model.

James Wright3.8
86kg / 13st 8lb · 183cm · Back/side combination · lead reviewer — not the 104kg tester · York South Bank
“Thicker springs, a real flip, both faces extra firm. I ran warmer on the 9. I would buy it for a 104kg back sleeper. I would not keep it as my own combination bed. I am 86kg, not David.”
Sarah Mitchell3.1
62kg / 9st 11lb · 165cm · Side sleeper · 62kg side — picnic table at the shoulder
“I lasted three nights. My partner who likes a hard bed was happy. I was not. Motion is fine. The 9 is still too hard if you sleep on your side. At 62kg it felt like a picnic table. That 42kg gap is the review.”
Emma Thompson2.4
71kg / 11st 2lb · 170cm · Side-dominant combination · 71kg hot, side-dominant — hated both faces
“I hated it. Hip on a table, both faces. This is not a hybrid with a firm option. Put me on Original’s 7/10. Heat can wait — the plank arrived first.”
David Patel4.6
104kg / 16st 5lb · 178cm · Back sleeper; sits on the edge · 104kg back — this is his OTTY
“Hips stayed up. This can be my mattress. 9 for every night, 10 if I want a board. Do not sell Extra Firm as a slightly firmer Original. I am 104kg. James is not.”
Rachel Adams4.0
68kg / 10st 10lb · 172cm · Mixed positions (physio lens) · 68kg physio lens — 15st+ stomach maybe
“I would not prescribe this to a typical side sleeper. Fifteen stone plus, stomach or back, and they already know they like a hard bed — then it is a conversation. It is not a physio default because the page says orthopaedic. At 68kg I am not David.”
The case against Extra Firm
We give it 4/5. The missing points are not rounding errors.
- It is the wrong bed for most people who find OTTY. Search “best hybrid” and you land on a brand that made its name on Original’s 7/10. Extra Firm sits in the same shop, at similar money, with a sterner name. Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb on her side hated it — 2.4, that stays. Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb thought Firm meant a nudge past medium-firm, lasted three nights, and called it a picnic table at the shoulder. OTTY even tells you to make sure you enjoy a firmer mattress. If that sentence made you pause, you wanted Original Hybrid.
- Side sleepers get a table, not a hug. OTTY says hips and shoulders generally find it uncomfortable. Sarah’s shoulder at 62kg / 9st 11lb sat on the 9 like a picnic table — 42kg lighter than the hips Extra Firm was built to hold. Emma’s hip at 71kg / 11st 2lb sat on it like furniture. The 10 was worse. Bamboo-and-charcoal memory on one face is not a side-sleeper comfort layer at this tension. Rachel at 68kg / 10st 10lb will talk to a 15st+ stomach sleeper. She will not start a typical side sleeper here because the copy says orthopaedic.
- The size picker is narrower than Original, at flagship-ish money. No small double. No EU. No Emperor. Single from £524.99, double £674.99, king £749.99, super king £824.99 on . DREAMY26 was 8% over £400 that day — check live, because codes expire. If you needed 4ft, Original still lists it. If you needed a 7/10, Extra Firm will not grow one if you wait a month.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Actually flippable: 9/10 and 10/10, both extra firm, double-sided 400g knit
- Thicker, bigger pocket springs than Original — OTTY’s own description
- David’s hips stayed up at 104kg / 16st 5lb on his back; 15st+ / 95kg is OTTY’s own recommendation — this is his mattress in the range
- Foam side supports; sitting is less of a collapse than a thin guest hybrid
- 100-night trial, 10-year warranty, CertiPUR/Europur, FIRA — use the trial as the purchase
Cons
- Wrong default for anyone who thought Firm meant Original’s 7/10
- Side sleepers: Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb got a picnic table at the shoulder; Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb hated it (2.4 stays); OTTY already warns about hips and shoulders
- No small double, no EU, no Emperor — narrower picker than Original
- A 42kg couple skips unless both actually want firm — Extra Firm does not split
- Comfort score is the low one on purpose; combination sleepers will argue with the roll
- From £524.99 looks like flagship money for a specialist bed
How we scored it
Category scores
Each bar is /100. Support (90) is David’s 104kg / 16st 5lb back on 9/10 — hips stayed up, this is his mattress. Comfort (58) is Sarah’s 62kg / 9st 11lb shoulder on the same plank, plus Emma’s 2.4 at 71kg / 11st 2lb. Edge (82) is David sitting, not James at 86kg / 13st 8lb pretending to be 104kg. Value (68) is middling until you are the 15st+ back sleeper; it is a poor buy if you are Sarah.
Weighting follows our published method: comfort and support first, then cooling, motion, edges, durability and value. Support is Extra Firm’s high score — David at 104kg / 16st 5lb, not James at 86kg / 13st 8lb. Comfort is the low one — that is the product, not a failed Original. Value is middling until you are the 15st+ back sleeper this was built for; it is a poor buy if you are Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb or Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb.
What is inside: thicker springs, two hard faces
OTTY’s live layer tour is a double-sided hybrid around a thicker pocket-spring core. Count the marketing tiles and you get cover, FlexFoam, springs, side supports, Reflex/high-density support foam, bamboo-and-charcoal memory. The important bit is which face you sleep on. If a retailer listing pastes Original’s Airflow copy onto Extra Firm, that is leftover copy from another mattress — this model’s story is the flip, not a single-sided chimney.
| # | Layer | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 400g double-sided knit | Thick, washable cover on both faces. Soft in the hand, not a pillow-top. Follow OTTY’s wash label — we did not strip ours to run a laundry experiment. This is why you can actually flip the mattress. |
| 2 | FlexFoam | High-density foam OTTY credits for the firm support that gives Extra Firm its name. Structure, not a hug. It does not turn a 10/10 into a 7/10 if you wait a week. |
| 3 | Thicker encapsulated pocket springs | Up to 2,000. OTTY says larger and thicker than Original — stronger, more “on the mattress.” Individual pockets still cut motion versus an old open coil; they will not make Sarah’s shoulder at 62kg / 9st 11lb happy, and they will not make Emma’s 2.4 a 4. |
| 4 | Foam side supports | Thick borders so the sleep surface runs closer to the edge and you are less likely to roll off a hard bed. Sitting to put socks on is usable. It is still not a hotel divan perch. |
| 5 | Reflex / high-density support foam (10/10 face) | The firmer face. Comfort and extra support on top of the springs when you flip to 10. David at 104kg / 16st 5lb did not need this every night. James at 86kg / 13st 8lb used it as a board and went back to 9. He is the lead, not a stand-in for 104kg. |
| 6 | Bamboo & charcoal memory (9/10 face) | The slightly less brutal extra-firm face. OTTY talks temperature, moisture and odour. Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb still sat on it like a picnic table. Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb still sat on it like a table. Charcoal foam is not a side-sleeper prescription at this tension. |
Depth is the spec Original and Extra Firm share: 25cm, printed. Aura is 23cm. Pure Pro is 27cm. If your bunk has a hard cap, measure the expanded mattress. CertiPUR/Europur covers the foams; FIRA is the furniture test OTTY leans on. OTTY does not print a factory country for the boxed hybrids; the handmade Natural line is a separate range.
Firmness: 9/10 and 10/10, not 7 versus 9
OTTY prints 9/10 one side, 10/10 the other. For David at 104kg / 16st 5lb on his back, 9 was the floor he wanted and 10 was optional. For Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb on her side, both numbers were a picnic table at the shoulder — 42kg lighter than the hips this stack was built to hold. For Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb, both numbers were a table; her 2.4 stays. I landed at about 9/10 as a combination sleeper at 86kg / 13st 8lb who is not David’s weight — usable on my back, a struggle on my side, never Original’s 7/10 no matter which way I flipped it.
Ten minutes in a shop aisle will feel firmer than night four, and Extra Firm does not have much softness to grow into. Foam warms; this stack still reads extra firm. That is why Emma’s two hours, Sarah’s three nights, and David’s week can all be true. Use a sit to reject bounce you hate. Use the 100 nights to live with a plank. If you wanted a flippable medium-versus-firm, look at Eve’s Wunderflip family — different brand, different contract — or stay on Original and stop hunting for a secret medium face here.
Sleep positions and body weight
| Sleeper | Fit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stomach | Good (15st+) | Rachel’s maybe at 68kg / 10st 10lb. Hips stay up if you already like a hard bed and you are in David’s 15st+ class. Lightweight fronts may last a trial and still hate mornings. Do not start here because a page said orthopaedic. |
| Back | Good (heavier) | David’s case at 104kg / 16st 5lb — the heavier tester, not James. Average-weight backs who like a little give should try Original first. Extra Firm is the specialist, not the default back bed. James at 86kg / 13st 8lb could sleep on his back and still would not keep it. |
| Side | Poor | Sarah’s picnic table at 62kg / 9st 11lb. Emma’s hate at 71kg / 11st 2lb — 2.4 stays. OTTY already says hips and shoulders generally find it uncomfortable. Believe the brand — flipping it will not add contour. A surface that holds 104kg hips is a picnic table to 62kg shoulders. |
| Combination | Poor–fair | James’s complaint at 86kg / 13st 8lb: the back half of the night is fine, the side half argues. Sarah lasted three nights. If you roll, this nags. He is the lead, not a stand-in for 104kg. |
OTTY prints the 15st / 95kg line on the live page as a recommendation, not a tested limit. Treat David’s week at 104kg / 16st 5lb as the practical “this is my main bed.” James at 86kg / 13st 8lb is the lead, not a stand-in for that mass. Below that weight, Original Hybrid is the cheaper way to stay inside OTTY than hoping Extra Firm “beds in” under a lighter frame. A 9/10–10/10 flippable firm surface that holds 104kg hips is a picnic table to 62kg shoulders — that 42kg gap is why Sarah’s 3.1 and David’s 4.6 can share one model.
Match the kilogram figure, not the word Firm
Body weight is not a vibe. It is how far you travel through the comfort layer before the core holds you. Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb often needs a softer top so her shoulder can drop. David at 104kg / 16st 5lb often needs that same top to stop sooner, or his hips make a hammock. James at 86kg / 13st 8lb sits between them — useful as a typical UK male, useless as a stand-in for a 104kg back sleeper. If you are shopping this OTTY Extra Firm Hybrid because a review said “medium-firm,” match the kilogram figure nearest yours, not the brand icon.
| Tester | Weight | Fit | What that weight actually did |
|---|---|---|---|
Sarah Mitchell | 62kg / 9st 11lb | Skip | 62kg / 9st 11lb side. Picnic table at the shoulder. Three nights, 3.1 — that stays. A 9/10–10/10 surface that holds 104kg hips will not hug 62kg shoulders. Open Original. |
Rachel Adams | 68kg / 10st 10lb | Mixed | 68kg / 10st 10lb physio lens. Would talk to a 15st+ stomach sleeper who already likes a hard bed. Will not start a typical side sleeper here because the page says orthopaedic. At 68kg she is not David. |
Emma Thompson | 71kg / 11st 2lb | Skip | 71kg / 11st 2lb hot, side-dominant. Hated both faces — 2.4, hip on a table, that stays. Heat is her usual veto; here the plank arrived first. |
James Wright | 86kg / 13st 8lb | Mixed | 86kg / 13st 8lb hot back/side. Lead reviewer — not the 104kg tester. Usable on his back in York. Shoulder argued on the roll. Would buy it for David. Would not keep it. |
David Patel | 104kg / 16st 5lb | Strong | 104kg / 16st 5lb back, sits on the edge. This is his mattress in the OTTY range. OTTY prints 15st+; he is 16st 5lb. Hips stayed up on 9/10. Sit was a compress, not a bench. 4.6. |
Find yourself on the scale
Use these bands as a first filter, then use the trial. They are how this mattress behaved for our panel, not a medical chart. A 95kg side sleeper is not David, and a 70kg stomach sleeper is not Sarah.
| Your weight | Fit on this mattress | Read this first |
|---|---|---|
| Under ~70kg, especially side | Skip | Sarah’s weight. Picnic table at the shoulder, and flipping it will not add contour. Original’s 7/10 is the OTTY for her. |
| ~70–90kg, mixed back/side | Mixed | James’s weight. Fine on his back, a struggle on his side. Not a stand-in for 104kg. Trial first if you already know you like a hard bed. |
| ~70–90kg, sleeps properly hot, side-dominant | Skip | Emma Thompson’s veto. The plank arrived before the heat complaint. We did not tape probes into the foam. |
| 15st+ / ~95kg and up, stomach or back | Strong | OTTY’s own recommendation, and David’s weight. A buy for a heavier stomach sleeper who already wants a plank. This is the specialist, not the default hybrid. |
| 104kg / 16st 5lb back (David’s build) | Strong | The model. Hips stayed up. Buy on sale. He is the heavy tester — not James. |
| Couple with a 42kg gap (62kg side next to 104kg back) | Skip | Unless both of you actually want firm. Extra Firm does not come in two tensions, and Sarah’s picnic table and David’s floor will not share one king happily. |
Manufacturer limit: OTTY recommends Extra Firm for over 15 stone / 95kg, stomach and back — a comfort recommendation on the live page, not a printed per-side warranty limit. David at 104kg / 16st 5lb is inside that line and is the customer. Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb is not. That is a warranty ceiling, not a comfort promise. David at 104kg is inside most UK boxed-hybrid caps and still the person most likely to find a plush surface too soft.
Couples with a large weight gap should read Sarah and David as the two ends of the argument. They are 42kg apart. On Extra Firm the heavier partner gets the floor; the lighter partner gets the picnic table. Skip unless both of you actually want firm. One mattress cannot run two firmnesses here — both faces are extra firm. Use the trial as the product. More on matching firmness to body type: firmness by sleep position.
Heat, couples, edges
Cooling is mid, not a gadget score. Pocket springs move more air than all-foam. Bamboo-and-charcoal memory on the 9/10 face still holds some heat — James at 86kg / 13st 8lb ran warmer on 9 than on 10 in that York bedroom with a 13.5 tog and no AC. Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb was too busy hating the firmness to file a heat complaint. If heat is your only problem on every bed, Extra Firm will not turn you into a side sleeper who loves a 10/10.
Couples: pocket springs isolate better than an old open coil and worse than a slow foam slab. Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb barely felt a partner get up and still wanted out because of her shoulder. If one of you wants a plank (David at 104kg / 16st 5lb) and the other sleeps on their side (Sarah, or Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb), this is a relationship argument, not a motion-isolation argument. A 42kg couple skips unless both actually want firm. Edges: foam borders help. I sit to put socks on and the corner holds better than Aura. David sitting at 104kg was still a compress, not a bench — that is his job on the panel, not James’s at 86kg / 13st 8lb.
Durability and care
- Rotate head-to-foot monthly for six months, then every three. Flip as well — that is the point of Extra Firm. The 9 and the 10 are both sleep faces.
- Protector during the 100 nights. Cover is a double-sided washable 400g knit; follow OTTY’s label. Do not steam the foams. Unbox within OTTY’s window or you can void terms.
- Thicker springs and FlexFoam are the durability story OTTY is selling. They do not stop body impressions at year four if you never rotate and never flip.
The 10-year warranty covers manufacturing defects, not “it still feels like a 10/10 and I wanted a 7.”
Unboxing and the first week
Extra Firm arrives vacuum-rolled in an OTTY box. OTTY’s standard delivery is a two-person courier on the UK mainland; room-of-choice and old-mattress removal are extras at checkout. A single can still be an awkward one-person lift on a narrow stair. Double and up want two people even if the van crew carried it to the door. Cut the wrap on the bed base. Give it 24–72 hours before you decide 9 is wrong — the first night on a half-expanded hybrid is a useless test. Open a window for the new-foam smell. CertiPUR is not a perfume.
Wait until it is roughly 25cm before fighting fitted sheets, and wait before you flip. There are thicker coils in there; they need to stand up. Do not sleep on it the afternoon you cut the plastic and then call the 9 “too hard.” It will be too hard later as well, if you are Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb or Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb. That is a different problem. If you are David at 104kg / 16st 5lb, the first half-expanded night is still a useless test — give the springs 24–72 hours before you decide 9 is the floor you wanted.
Bed base and sheets
A firm hybrid needs a base that does not undo the firmness. Keep slat gaps around 7cm or less — OTTY’s own extra-firm FAQ says the same, because a wide gap lets the spring unit sag between bars and will not help the 10-year paperwork. A solid platform or a close-slatted frame keeps the 9 and the 10 honest. A tired sprung divan can soften the overall feel, which is the opposite of what you are buying it for. Floor use is a last resort for a week, not a five-year plan.
Sheets: 25cm class, printed. Ordinary 25cm fitted sheets usually stay on after expansion. Extra-deep 30–35cm pockets help if you stack a protector. That is useful in a spare room with a mixed linen cupboard. Add a protector for the trial; do not glue it down. Extra-deep sheets are mandatory once you climb to Pure Pro’s 27cm — not the argument here.
UK buying details: trial, warranty, delivery
100-night trial
On OTTY-direct orders: they collect, full refund if you are not satisfied. Starts on delivery. Give a hard bed more than a long weekend — and still send it back if you are Sarah at 62kg or Emma at 71kg. Third-party tickets can differ. Ask.
10-year warranty
Defects in the spring unit and foams under normal use. Ordinary softening and body impressions from skipped rotation are not defects. Extra firm that stays extra firm is not a warranty event.
Delivery
Free premium two-person delivery to most UK mainland addresses as standard. Room of choice and old mattress removal are extras at checkout. Date picker plus a morning ETA window — check the live checkout, not a blog from 2024.
Finance / discounts
0% APR over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months subject to status. On 5 September 2026 the banner was DREAMY26 — 8% off orders over £400. Codes move. Do not pay the unreduced ticket if a working code will cut it.
OTTY is mostly a boxed brand. Ten minutes on a shop floor, if you can find one, still will not show Emma’s two hours, Sarah’s picnic-table shoulder at 62kg / 9st 11lb, or David’s week at 104kg / 16st 5lb. Buy from OTTY if you want OTTY’s 100 nights in writing.
UK sizes and prices
OTTY advertised Extra Firm from £524.99 including VAT when we checked. Unlike Eve’s auto-applied basket discounts, these read as the actual size prices rather than a marked-down RRP. Extra Firm vs Original Hybrid
Same 25cm class, similar from-price, completely different night. Original is the 7/10 flagship most people should try — including the people who typed Firm into Google. Extra Firm is 9 or 10, thicker springs, no small double. OTTY Original Hybrid review.
| Extra Firm Hybrid | Original Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|
| Type / depth | Flippable hybrid · 25cm · 9/10 and 10/10 | Flagship hybrid · 25cm · 7/10 medium-firm |
| Springs | Up to 2,000 thicker/bigger pockets (OTTY’s words) | Up to 2,000 × 16cm pocket springs |
| Feel | On the mattress. Sarah’s picnic table at 62kg / 9st 11lb. Emma’s table at 71kg / 11st 2lb. David’s floor at 104kg / 16st 5lb. | Bounce under foam — the OTTY most people mean |
| Small double / EU / Emperor | Not listed | Original’s picker is the wide one |
| When it is enough | 15st+, stomach/back, you already want a hard bed — David at 104kg / 16st 5lb | Typical UK sleeper, mixed positions, “best hybrid” query |
| Advertised from (5 September 2026) | £524.99 | £499.99 |
Extra Firm vs Pure Pro
Pure Pro is charcoal foam plus a second comfort-spring layer at 27cm and 7/10. Extra Firm is a 25cm plank with a flip. They share a bamboo-and-charcoal sentence and almost nothing else. OTTY Pure Pro Hybrid review.
| Extra Firm Hybrid | Pure Pro Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|
| Core | Thicker 2,000-spring unit, flippable faces | Up to 3,000 (2,000 × 16cm + 1,000 × 2cm comfort springs) |
| Depth / feel | 25cm · extra firm 9 or 10 | 27cm · medium-firm 7/10 |
| Charcoal foam | On the 9/10 face — still a hard bed | Part of a taller comfort stack, not a plank |
| Best for | Heavier stomach/back who wants a board — David at 104kg / 16st 5lb | You wanted Pure’s charcoal and a second spring layer |
| Advertised from (5 September 2026) | £524.99 | £539.99 |
Extra Firm vs Eve Original Hybrid (different brand)
Eve’s Original Hybrid is a 25cm foam-over-springs hug at a medium-firm bounce — the bed David at 104kg / 16st 5lb wanted when we put him on Eve foam. Extra Firm is the opposite: less hug, more board, OTTY’s thicker coils. James at 86kg / 13st 8lb is the lead on both pages, not a stand-in for 104kg. Eve Original Hybrid review.
| OTTY Extra Firm | Eve Original Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Flippable extra-firm hybrid, 25cm | Eve foam over 12cm pocket springs, 25cm |
| Feel | 9/10 or 10/10 · on the mattress | Medium-firm hug with bounce underneath |
| Best for | 15st+ stomach/back who already wants a hard OTTY — David at 104kg / 16st 5lb | Typical Eve shopper who wanted springs under the hug |
| Trial | 100 nights | 200 nights |
| Advertised from | £524.99 | £699 |
Hug-plus-springs versus a flippable plank is a ten-minute feel difference. Eve’s longer trial does not make Extra Firm a side-sleeper bed. OTTY’s 100 nights are enough to know if you are David at 104kg / 16st 5lb or Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb — 42kg apart on the same 9/10–10/10 surface.
Better alternatives (if Extra Firm is the wrong job)
- OTTY Original Hybrid — the 7/10 people thought “firm” meant. Small double and EU sizes still listed. Most “best hybrid” clicks should start here.
- OTTY Pure Pro Hybrid — charcoal foam plus a second comfort-spring layer at 27cm and 7/10. Pay it for bounce at normal firmness, not for a 10/10 face.
- Which OTTY should I buy? — the six current UK boxed hybrids, scored and linked. Includes Aura, Pure and Pure+.
- Eve Original Hybrid — 25cm Eve foam over pocket springs, 200-night trial. Buy it for hug-plus-bounce, not for OTTY’s plank.
OTTY Extra Firm Hybrid FAQ
Final verdict
I would buy this for David — 104kg / 16st 5lb, on his back, who actually wants a hard bed and sits inside OTTY’s 15st+ recommendation — on OTTY’s own 100 nights, preferably with DREAMY26 still taking 8% over £400. That is a buy-on-sale for 104kg back. I would not buy it for Sarah at 62kg / 9st 11lb on her side: a 9/10–10/10 surface that holds 104kg hips is a picnic table to 62kg shoulders. I would not buy it for Emma at 71kg / 11st 2lb — 2.4, both faces, that stays. I would not buy it for a 42kg couple unless both of you actually want firm. I would not buy it because a Google tab said OTTY hybrid. I would not keep it as my own combination mattress in that York terrace — I am 86kg / 13st 8lb, the lead, not the 104kg tester. The 9 and the 10 are the product. The missing medium face is the product too. Guests for a weekend will not argue if they already like a firm hotel. That is not Rachel’s side-sleeper prescription at 68kg / 10st 10lb, and not a reason to skip Original if you wanted 7/10.
Our score: 4/5. Keep the receipt. Use the 100 nights.

About the tester

James Wright
Lead Product Tester · Former Quality Manager, Silentnight Beds
James spent 10 years in Silentnight quality control. He is 86kg / 13st 8lb — the lead reviewer, not the 104kg tester. He reads a spring unit by how it answers a hip, not by the word Firm on the box. Extra Firm is David Patel’s mattress in this OTTY range: 104kg / 16st 5lb, on his back, who actually wants a hard bed. James would buy it for David. He would not buy it for Sarah Mitchell at 62kg / 9st 11lb on her side — a 9/10–10/10 surface that holds 104kg hips is a picnic table to 62kg shoulders — he would not buy it for Emma Thompson at 71kg / 11st 2lb, and he would not keep it as his own combination-sleeper mattress in York.
