The money — rank the gap, then buy
Emma’s from-prices on : Original £349, Elite £649. That is £300 for AirGrid and 2cm, not for a longer trial. Both are 200 nights and 10 years. Emma runs almost-constant promotions. The strikethrough is marketing.

David Patel at 104kg is 42kg heavier than Sarah Mitchell at 62kg. That gap is why one mattress is a yes and a no on the same page.
What the extra money actually buys
Not a thicker Original. Not a longer trial. A different comfort layer.
- AirGrid instead of Halo foam as the star. Elite’s polymer is mostly open air and buckles sideways. Original’s Halo / MemoryAdapt is a conventional hugging slab over springs. If you already know foam cooks you, that is the spend.
- A softer, taller sleep surface. Elite is about 27cm and medium-soft. Original is about 25cm and marketed medium-firm — testers argue with that badge in both directions.
- Better motion isolation in the room. Rachel Adams noticed a partner get up more on Original than on Elite. Couples who wake each other should trial Elite, not assume the word hybrid means silence.
- You give up the 4ft size, some edge, and money. No small double. The sitting edge is the weak moment on both boxed hybrids. The Elite double is heavier (~34kg vs ~29kg). Rotation is two people either way.
Do not skip Original Pro
Most people arrive here choosing between Original and Elite, but the mattress in the middle is often the right spend. Pro is 6-layer hybrid, 27cm, from £469, score 4.5/5. ThermoSync is graphite in foam — it conducts heat and hugs. Elite is empty polymer — it bounces and dumps heat into air. Independent named Elite the best Emma overall; Good Housekeeping still picked Pro as the 2026 all-rounder because it is cheaper for most people.
Four ways this upgrade goes wrong
- You have a 4ft frame. Elite does not exist in small double. Original does. Measure before the sale banner.
- You sleep on your front. Elite is too soft. Emma says so. David Patel would not start you there. Original or Lite.
- You pay double RRP. £999 for Elite is how Emma wants the comparison to look. Wait. The 200-night trial still runs on the sale ticket.
- You buy Performance because it sounds like a running shoe. Performance 26 starts at £729 — often more than Elite on sale — and it is a newer stack, not a renamed Elite. Read which Emma should I buy if you are not sure you even wanted this pair.

Final call
Buy Original on a sale if you are a normal UK household. Buy Elite on a sale if you sleep hot on your side and a shoulder is why you are shopping. Buy Pro if heat is the only problem and you like a hug. Do not buy Elite because the name sounds like the top of a ladder — Performance is sitting above it with a bigger ticket and a thinner paper trail.
